Complete Article: So Who Toasts?  Wedding Reception Toasting Advice.

Toasts are fun!  Speeches and toasts add a lot to a wedding reception, and most people want them.  Thankfully this is not one more task for you to complete, figure out or decide on.  All that is required of you is communication!

First of all, figure out who you'd like to make a toast or speech.  Tell them ahead of time so they can prepare.  Sometimes, people are unaware of their official bridal party duties.  It's easier for everyone if the expectations are pre-set and clear!  If you have a reception "script" or event timeline, make sure to include about 10 min for toasting and speeches.  Honestly, any more than 10 minutes is boring for guests.  If you don't have access to a microphone, you may want to shorten this time slot even more considering some guests may not be able to hear what is being said anyway!

So...who should make a toast at the reception?  Here's our recommendations:

Expected Toasters:  Best Man

Normal Toasters:  Best man, maid/matron of honor, father of the bride, bride, groom

Optional Toasters: Officiant (if a close friend or family member), other bridal party members, other close family members

Written toasts can help alleviate nerves and lengthy, rambling speeches.  Encourage your 'toasters' to write down what they're going to say ahead of time if possible!  Are you planning on toasting your new spouse, parents, friends & family, and helpers?  If so, take your own advice and write out your toast too.  Simplify your life - Keep it short and meaningful!
